Scene:
The Year? 1995.
The place? Sun N’ Lake Elementary School
The weather? It’s Florida… take a guess.
Dear Zachary,
Will you be my boyfriend?
Check one:
⃞ Yes
⃞ No
I can’t tell you how many times that letter came back checked ‘No.’
But that didn’t deter me. Oh no!
I simply wrote a new one each day.
You see, I was smitten.
At the ripe age of 7, I developed my first crush – Zachary Walker.
He was the cutest boy I had laid eyes on in my 7 years of life.
I mean, you should have seen his bowl haircut, it was perfection.
Each day I wrote that same simple note from my desk in the front row.
Each day it passed through the hands of about 5 other 2nd graders
Each day it made contact with Zachary in the back row.
And each day, each day, he checked no.
It’s so much easier being honest and sharing your feelings as a young child.
Long before you are faced with the insecurities life throws at you.
Before you really, truly care, or can wrap your tiny mind around what others think.
Each day I was met with a “no.”
Until one glorious day, my daily note came back checked ‘yes’
Sure, maybe he did it because he felt sorry for me, or admired my consistency,
But in my mind, I thought:
“HALLELUJAH!!!
I knew it. He loves me too!”
I officially had my first boyfriend.
So, as you can imagine, we did what all elementary couples do.
We awkwardly gazed at each other, and started eating lunch together.
It even got a little more serious when he gave me a piggyback ride on the playground.
It was exactly how I envisioned it would be.
Like a dream!
A dream that lasted all of two days.
“Brittany, we are moving to Colorado next week.”
SKKKKEEERRRRRT! Stop the music!
Yeah that ended quickly.
And that was my first boyfriend, the first of many.
I had one for every grade.
Huh-
Now that I think about it,
My dating life was much more active as a child than as a woman in her 30’s.
Life is just a bit more complicated, okay?!
What can I say, it was a successful start for this Hot Mess Dating Success-
